iOS Content & Privacy Restrictions | grey app icon

The app icon turning grey when Content & Privacy Restrictions are active means iOS is actively blocking the app based on an Age Rating limit, an App Block rule, or a Downtime schedule.

When Apple's system flags an app as restricted, it dims the app icon on your home screen and locks you out of using it.

Follow these specific paths to unblock the icon while keeping your other restrictions active:

  • Fix the Age Rating Restriction
Real Softphone is a communications apps that allow unrestricted web access via VoIP, which often forces iOS to categorize them under higher age tiers (like 17+). If your content restrictions limit apps to a lower age (like 12+), the icon will turn grey
  1. Open iPhone Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  3. Tap Store, Web, Siri & Game Center Content (or Content Restrictions on older iOS versions).
  4. Tap Apps.
  5. Change the setting to Allow All (or select Unrated / 17+).

  • Move the App to "Always Allowed"
If you have an overall "App Limit" or "Downtime" active, it will grey out your communications tools. You can force Real Softphone to remain fully active at all times
  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Scroll down and tap Always Allowed.
  3. Find Real Softphone under the Choose Apps section.
  4. Tap the green plus (+) icon next to it to move it up to the Allowed Apps list.

  • Check for Direct App Blocking (iOS 18 and newer)
If you manage this device via a family group, the app may have been manually blocked by a organizer:
  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Tap Apps & Websites.
  3. Check the Blocked list. If the app is listed there, tap it and select Allow App.

  • Refresh the Screen Time Cache
If the icon stays grey even after modifying the settings above, iOS's Screen Time database is glitching. To force a recalculation:
  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time.
  2. Scroll to the very bottom and tap Turn Off App & Website Activity.
  3. Wait 10 seconds, then tap Turn On App & Website Activity to re-enable it
